Brooklyn based hip-hop artist DeScribe has teamed up with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel to create the single “In the Stereo,” one of the most original and compelling urban pop songs to date. The track smashes in with a Swizz Beats rhythm and builds melodically with DeScribe’s signature vocals. It brings together DeScribe’s diverse musical influences including Drake, K’NAAN and Damian Marley, supported by a stunning beat produced by The InVaderz. The song leads into Idan’s world of sound and layered harmonies in Hebrew. Idan burst onto the world music scene with his triple platinum debut album, firmly establishing himself as a new type of Israeli pop star. DeScribe is likewise preparing his debut album, entitled “In The Red,” after releasing 3 singles to critical acclaim and slated for release in early 2012.
DeScribe sat down with The Algemeiner to discuss the latest single and what’s to come for 2012.
You just did a track with Israeli heavy hitter Idan Raichel. How did this collaboration come about and what was it like?
It was actually very stimulating musically. Idan Raichel is an amazing light in the music world not to mention an extremely genius multi-platinum musician. Both me and my whole production team enjoyed the process of creating this song and Idan brought a whole new fire to it.
The song mixes a very contemporary American pop sound with Hebrew scripture, it’s definitely an out of the box pop song. What was the thought behind that and who is the target audience?
The truth is my foundation is pop right now but I truly believe in letting the music lead the way when we create new music. In this case I turned to multiple styles and genres in the creation process to bring awareness to new possible fans from different genres all working together in harmony. Idan Raichel has a world music/middle eastern twist, while Beniton brings the Caribbean flavor to the song. The target audience is from all of the genres infused in the song. Pop, Dancehall, Middle Eastern, World, Urban are all genres found in this composition.
Is this a one off single or is it part of a bigger project?
This single is the 2nd of 4 free singles being released. A free download single is available every month for 4 months on my website.
The singles are part of the “In The Red” EP preceding the full album which we hope will come around June time, in coordination with Shemspeed.
How do you mix your religious views with the mainstream music scene, which promotes some of the opposite values?
I try to keep away from harmful, negative associations like politics, gossip and hating and try to focus on making good music with good people. The music is my tool to reach out and touch the earth. My spiritual message is a part of me and therefore my music and I see it as my inner way of communicating my message to the world. I don’t see music as a competition – I’m in my own lane. Music can have either a positive affect or a negative affect and you must always strive to elevate, so thats what we do with our music.
Who else have you collaborated with and how was this collaboration with Idan Raichel different?
Matisyahu, Rohan Marley, and Ill-Factor to name a few. But I gotta say, Idan Raichel is a rare musical inspiration, and working with him was almost 3 dimensional in a musical sense, and I was deep in the vibe. It was just a great experience to watch him work his magic.
What could we expect to see from DeScribe in 2012?
I hope to release a few new music videos, free music, some amazing developments with our reality shows (information to come) a tour, a long awaited debut album soon. Stay tuned and watch for the latest music and videos.
